The name Hugh Hefner is all but synonymous with debauchery – the ‘Playboy’ founder is equally famous for his racy publication as his simultaneous relationships with young, blonde women and the notoriously raucous parties held at Playboy Mansion. But the 83-year-old ladies’ man has a history of putting his money where his mouth is, politically speaking. “One of the things I find really curious is when people say I’ve lived an amoral life,” says the paterfamilias of the Playboy dynasty. “From my perspective, it’s quite the contrary. I feel I’ve lived a very moral life. I’ve been on the side of angels from the beginning.”
‘Hugh Hefner: Playboy, Activist and Rebel,’ a documentary premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival next month, shows the deeper side of Hugh Hefner – civil rights activist and political ally of women and gays. See highlights from his interview with the Daily Beast below.
“This film has less to do with the lifestyle and more to do with my commitment to social change,” Hefner says of the documentary by Oscar award-winning filmmaker Brigitte Berman.
She adds, “When people think of him, they think of the babes, the boobs, the blondes. There’s another side to him, one I think is too often overlooked.”
Hefner was a champion of civil rights from the very beginning of the movement. He says, “I graduated from the University of Illinois in 1948, and there were the beginnings of racial integration. There were student protests against restaurants and movie theaters that had segregation, and I took part in some of those protests.” Later, when he learned that two of the Southern franchises of his Playboy nightclubs were segregated, he bought back the outlets at his own expense to integrate them.
Hefner also supported gay rights at a time when the concept was nearly unheard of in mainstream America. Playboy published a short, science fiction piece wherein homosexuality was the norm and heterosexuals were considered socially deviant. The story was originally turned down by Esquire, Hefner explains, and recalls the numerous angry letters the magazine received in response. The magazine ran a rebuttal suggesting that “if it was wrong to persecute heterosexuals in a homosexual society, then the reverse was wrong too.”Full article

A U.S. District Court Judge has handed down a ruling that could have far-reaching implications for DVD pirates. Judge Marilyn Hall Patel ruled that multimedia software company RealNetworks, purveyors of the RealPlayer media player, can no longer distribute the program RealDVD, which lets users rip and back up their DVD content. The Motion Picture Association of American originally brought the suit about a year ago.
The ruling said that RealNetworks violated U.S. copyright laws by selling the product. Patel’s ruling didn’t condemn users, only the company. It’s legal for users to rip and possess copied DVDs, but it’s illegal to produce a program that does it.
“While it may well be fair use for an individual consumer to store a backup copy of a personally-owned DVD on that individual’s computer, a federal law has nonetheless made it illegal to manufacture or traffic in a device or tool that permits a consumer to make such copies,” the ruling read.
Anti-piracy advocates may applaud the ruling, but tech analyst Brennon Slattery noted that RealDVD wasn’t made for mass-ripping DVDs. It only let users rip and store one copy of a movie on their hard drive, and if users wanted to save additional copies elsewhere, they would have to pay a fee.
“It’s perfectly legal to rip music from a CD and upload it onto an iPod for personal use,” Slattery said. “Why can’t a person do the same with their own copies of movies? The assumption is that everyone using a program such as RealDVD is a criminal bent on ripping as many Netflix movies as possible, rather than a law-abiding citizen who simply wants to watch flicks on the go.”
But that’s not how the MPAA saw it.
Dan Glickman, the head of the MPAA, hailed the verdict. “We are very pleased with the court’s decision,” MPAA chieftain Dan Glickman said. “This is a victory for the creators and producers of motion pictures and television shows, and for the rule of law in our digital economy.”
It seems that the DVD ripping days are over.

LOS ANGELES — An AIDS advocacy group filed complaints Thursday with state officials against 16 production companies that show unprotected sex in porn movies. The AIDS Healthcare Foundation filed the action with the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health, alleging the practice amounts to unsafe behavior in a California workplace.
“We will not stop until there is a policy of requiring condoms to be used in porn,” foundation president Michael Weinstein said. By law, U.S. adult film actors must prove they have tested negative for HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases within 30 days of going to work on a film. CalOSHA spokesman Dean Fryer said the regulatory agency requires workers in any industry where there is a “possibility of transmission of fluids,” including health care and adult films, to reduce the risk of disease transmission.
“The employers of porn actors are required to provide a safe and healthy work environment,” Fryer said.
Nearly 60 adult DVDs accompany the complaints against Hustler Video, Maverick Entertainment, Vivid and other porn production companies in Los Angeles. Many people in the multibillion-dollar industry oppose the use of condoms in the films. Hustler publisher Larry Flynt told The Associated Press, “people who enjoy viewing adult films do not want to see people using condoms.” “While it might provide some additional protection, the sales are not going to be there to make the effort worthwhile for the actors and actresses,” he said. Niche content has been a part of adult entertainment for decades, and the adult Internet explosion of the 1990s and 2000s has resulted in a wider variety of niche content than ever. From gay niches and BDSM niches to alt-porn niches and ethnic niches, an endless amount of micro-niches and sub-niches can be found on the Internet in 2009. Despite the current economic crisis, niche content remains an attractive option for many adult Internet companies.
Morgan Sommer, president of the gay-oriented, Los Angeles-based Cybersocket, said that providers of niche adult content have a major advantage during a recession: They are appealing to people who are very specific about what they want and tend to be quite passionate when they find it. “Consumers of niche content are extremely loyal during both good and bad times because by definition, they want something that is very unique and hard to find,” Sommer explained.
One of niche content’s BDSM success stories is the New York City-based adult webmaster/content producer Moe Styles, who founded AmateurBound.com in 1999. Styles said that although AmateurBound.com experienced steady growth for nine years, business has been down by about 30 percent during the current recession. Nonetheless, he stressed that having exciting niche content has enabled him to maintain a lot of devoted followers even in a challenging economy.
“I’ve had some members who have been coming back for the whole 10 years I’ve been in business, which is an honor,” Styles said. “Coming back is something they don’t have to do, and it’s very flattering. I find that my membership base has been loyal throughout the years — and the way the economy is, I’m glad to have customers like that.”
One pattern that Styles has observed during the current recession is some members leaving his site only to rejoin a few months later; those customers, he said, are probably having financial problems but remain enthusiastic about his content — and the fact that they keep rejoining, he said, underscores their enthusiasm.
During a recession, some niche-oriented webmasters might be tempted to lower the monthly cost of their membership sites in the hope of attracting new members. But Sommer strongly advised against that. “One of the things not to do during a recession is to start reducing your website’s prices,” Sommer said. “If you start lowering your prices when times are bad, getting your prices back up to normal prices when times are good is almost impossible. A recession doesn’t require you to change your business behavior. You should always be selling a good product. You should always be selling an honest product. You should always be doing your very best to convey to your potential customers why your product is something they should want. During a recession or not during a recession, those are the rules of business that always apply.”
Niche content will no doubt continue to diversify, and Sommer said that the niche content providers who are smart, creative and hard-working will be the ones who come out ahead when the economy improves. “Niche content is still fundamental to the porn industry. It will always sell.” he concluded.
So join the hard-working webmaster niche, providing unique, targeted content that will make your business recession proof.

PIMPROLL 65% Super Revshare Pays You More – It’s That Simple

Offering the highest combined payout package in the industry, PIMPROLL Super Revshare allows webmasters to earn 65% of each initial signup and 65% of every rebill along with 65% of any cross sale revenue and 65% of each cross sale rebill as well. On top of all that, affiliates can also earn 25% of all webcam upsell revenue – making your total earnings from any single signup hundreds or thousands of dollars potentially.
“We understand that our role is to produce sites in a wide variety of niches with high quality tours and members areas designed to retain” said David K. of PIMPROLL. “However, as new revenue streams become available we also understand that RevShare affiliates should have a vested interest in the long-tail income that their joins generate. Our Super Revshare payouts and customizable link code system empowers affiliates to choose the options best suited to their own traffic. We want our affiliates to earn the maximum amount for the important effort they put into the marketing process.”
Some affiliates have expressed a desire to provide their customers with basic billing options that do not include cross sells or consoles. PIMPROLL has answered their requests by allowing affiliates to easily decide for themselves what to include or exclude from their custom join pages with a simple point and click interface inside the PIMPROLL affiliate program website.
Other affiliates have asked to take the opposite approach by requesting tours that offer ethical cross sells and upsells designed to maximize the revenue each join can generate. Again, PIMPROLL has responded by giving affiliates the option to include honest upsell and cross sell choices for their customers. Now with the addition of Super Revshare, webmasters who understand it is often easier to retain a member than it is to find a new member, can earn the highest potential payouts by promoting PIMPROLL premium domains in niche specific traffic categories.
Please Note: You do not need to create a new PimpRoll account to be able to promote Super Revshare. Simply by using PimpRoll’s regular partnership link codes you will now be entitled to earn these great payouts.
