By David Catanese, Politico Florida Gov. Charlie Crist will get a late fundraising burst for his independent Senate bid from Penthouse CEO Marc Bell, according to an invitation obtained by POLITICO.

The evening event will be held at Bell’s Boca Raton, Fla., home Oct. 7, less than a month before Crist faces Republican Marco Rubio and Democratic Rep. Kendrick Meek in one of the most closely watched Senate races in the country.

The invitation requests $500 per person to attend the general reception and $2,400 per couple for a VIP photo opportunity.

Bell, who also heads FriendFinder — one of the world’s largest social networking and multimedia entertainment companies — has long played in political races, donating to Democratic and Republican candidates. He gave to President George W. Bush’s 2004 reelection campaign, as well as to then-Gov. Mitt Romney and Sen. John McCain’s bids in 2008. This cycle, he’s mostly invested in helping to protect Democratic incumbents, donating to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and Florida Reps. Ron Klein and Ted Deutch.

Rubio’s campaign declined to comment on the fundraiser, but a spokesman for Meek told POLITICO, “Besides being a lifelong conservative, Crist’s only consistent position is that he will say or do anything to get elected.”

Playboy is facing a takeover tussle that promises to grow more and more lively. This lesson should not be lost on other established media entities. While the power of the Internet has rendered many tried-and-true brand names obsolete, others still hold appeal in the marketplace.

The key is whether a brand’s old-media brawn can translate smoothly and profitably to the brave new world of multimedia journalism. Playboy, given its subject matter, should make the transition to newer modes of distribution.

FriendFinder Networks, the company that controls Penthouse magazine, said Thursday that it has offered $210 million for Playboy Enterprises in an attempt to outdo an earlier bid by Playboy founder Hugh Hefner, the New York Times reported. See full story on the Penthouse parent’s bid for Playboy

FriendFinder is apparently willing to work with Hefner as a partner, allowing him to maintain editorial authority and remain a resident of the iconic Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles.

The bid by Hefner to take Playboy private by buying the minority stake he doesn’t already own – the opening salvo of this bidding war – has been valued at roughly $185 million. If you go by the numbers – and investors are wont to do just that – his offer is now the second best one on the table.
